The first record of The Doorman series, pre-emptive songs, was finished in May 2004 and may be regarded as a 'best-of' of embryonic homerecordings made in the previous seven years (under the legendary moniker of The Standard Deviation Space Invaders).

Originally having the working title The Seven Year Bitch, pre-emptive songs ranges from lo-fi indie rock (
'
friends coy destroy', 'fat chandler') to introspective guitar-only songs ('as a choking man fights for air') to instant classics (according to my mum....,'wedding') to short piano compositions accompanied by TV fragments that comment on outer body experiences ('the Hammarskjold inquiry') or that mirror the inanity of modern dating shows with the expulsion of native Americans ('dismissed from God's own country').

I only used an acoustic Western guitar, an electric Fender guitar, a MIDI keyboard, a computer microphone and auxiliary ambient sounds (surroundings, TV) for this record. In addition, Will Jones (UK resident) added drums on several songs.
